Rhodes University recently honoured the academic achievements of 65 staff members at its annual Vice-Chancellor and Thomas Alty Awards. The recipients earned a diverse array of qualifications, including eight postgraduate diplomas, five advanced diplomas, 21 CHERTL certifications, two bachelor's degrees, four honours degrees, nine master’s degrees, and 16 PhDs.

Each qualification marks a significant milestone in personal and professional development, contributing to the enhancement of teaching, administration, and student support across the institution.

In her welcoming address, Director of People and Culture, Susan Robertson, commended the resilience and dedication required to pursue further studies while managing work responsibilities. “There is nothing better than an academic who has a heart for teaching, learning, and knowledge,” she said, applauding the recipients for their commitment to growth.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Sizwe Mabizela extended heartfelt congratulations, recognising the effort and perseverance behind each qualification. “Completing further studies is no small task. It reflects countless hours of hard work, late-night study sessions, and rigorous assessments,” he said. “With your enhanced capabilities, you are now better equipped to contribute to the realisation of our university’s vision, mission, and purpose as a truly distinct and distinctive institution of higher learning.”

As part of the ceremony, recipients received their awards and commemorated the moment with photographs alongside the Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships, Dr Nomakwezi Mzilikazi.

The Vice-Chancellor and Thomas Alty Awards underscore Rhodes University’s commitment to fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. By celebrating staff achievements, the University not only recognises individual success but also reinforces the value it places on its people as its greatest asset. The knowledge and skills gained by these staff members promise to enrich the university community – academically and administratively – for years to come.
