Rhodes University is excited to announce the RU120 Makhanda Community Concert, headlined by the legendary Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse, on the 10th of May 2025 at 15:00, at the 1820 Settlers’ Monument, Guy Butler Theatre, in Makhanda.
This special event, organised by Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology in collaboration with the Makana Community Orchestra, will strengthen the University's ties with the Makhanda community and showcase the rich musical talent of the region. The concert will also be part of the closing events for the #RU120 celebration activities.
The concert will feature performances from the University's Department of Music and Musicology, the Rhodes University Chamber Choir, the Makana Community Orchestra (comprising musicians from across the Makana District, including local institutions), and the highly anticipated headline performance by Sipho ‘Hotstix’ Mabuse.
“This concert is testament to Rhodes University's ongoing commitment to Makhanda,” said Professor ‘Mabokang Monnapula-Mapesela, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic and Student Affairs. “We are thrilled to create a shared space that celebrates the incredible talent within our community and that provides an opportunity for connection and cultural appreciation.” The DVC will deliver a welcoming address at the concert.
One of the significant considerations for Rhodes University, and a fixture of the RU 2023-2028 Institutional Development (IDP) Umkhombandlela, is the continued pursuit of enhancing the student experience. As a peri-urban town, there are limited activities for students to connect with the broader community. This concert contributes to the efforts to enhance the student experience.
Funds raised from ticket sales will support our internal student debt fundraising efforts.
