O-Week at Rhodes University was an unforgettable experience that set the tone for the academic year ahead. As a female residence, we had the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities designed to foster connections and build a sense of community among new students. One of the highlights was Prince Alfred & Allan Gray House combined coming second overall in the RU Jamming competition.
We had a games night that was organised by the Prince Alfred House Committee. This event was a way to break the ice, with everyone participating in various games that encouraged teamwork and laughter. It was a great opportunity to meet fellow residents, share stories, and start forming friendships that will last throughout our time at university.
We had several meet-and-greet events with other residences, both female and male. These gatherings provided a relaxed environment for us to mingle and get to know each other. It was refreshing to see a diverse group of individuals coming together, all eager to start their university journey.
Prince Alfred joined Calata House for the second Community Engagement Orientation Session. This session introduced first years to the South African landscape, and its inequalities, and unlearning the mindset that University is just a place for getting your degree and then leaving.
Our first years attended the RU Community Engagement Showcase.
We spoke about the importance of realistic goal setting and how to deal with academic pressure. The Seniors also shared their past experiences and how they had dealt with the change and adapting to university life and pressure.
Prince Alfred and Allan Gray House collaborated to hold a academic mentor/mentee picnic get together. The purpose of this event was to get mentors and mentees comfortable with each other in a casual environment .
This event was a wellness hike to the Botanical Gardens, culminating in a journaling activity. The event aimed to promote mental well-being and camaraderie among participants. The hike was a resounding success, bringing together participants from various Residences for a day of introspection and bonding. The guided journaling sessions allowed participants to freely express their emotions, reflecting on their experiences, achievements, and personal growth.
On 13 September 2025, Prince Alfred House collaborated with Hilltop House 7 to host a wellness activity aimed at promoting relaxation, connection, and overall wellbeing. The event included simple but engaging activities such as Mindfulness Bingo and other wellness-orientated activities that encouraged reflection, mindfulness, and positive interaction. Light snacks were provided, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Attendance was good, and participants engaged actively, with many expressing that the activities offered a refreshing break from academic stress.
On Saturday, 20 September 2025, Prince Alfred House partnered with Canterbury House and Hilltop 8 House to host a “Glow in the Dark” braai at Canterbury House. Students dressed in casual braai attire, with some adding themed or costume elements that enhanced the fun. The evening featured various games, singing, and social activities that encouraged interaction and fostered a strong sense of community between the three residences.
The Internationalization Rep hosted a cultural switch day on the 24-September-2025. House Mates came together dressed up in their cultural attire and played different games centered around cultural and heritage practices such as reciting their clan names proudly, translating between each other’s languages and giving out fun facts about their own cultures. Food and traditional music coupled with dance was the order of the day.
